Antique Japanese 19th Century Blue And White Glazed Porcelain Vase Lamp C.1880
A large and handsomely painted Japanese Arita porcelain vase converted to a double-arm table lamp on a turned hardwood base.
The ovoid body with elegant flared neck is painted in underglaze blue with an all-over garden composition of prunus and cherry blossom branches, peony, bamboo shoots and multiple butterflies. The blooms rendered in the distinctive tight-floret technique characteristic of Japanese brushwork, the insects with lively tonal variation. A formal border of pendant lappets with floral fill decorates the neck; a thin gilt line marks the rim.
The white ground is fine-grained and bright, the glaze even throughout. The butterfly wings and peony heads carry hand-applied raised enamel detail.
Fitted with a double-arm brass lamp fitting on an adjustable column with turned finial, and raised on a shaped hardwood base with matching neck cap.
