English Arts & Crafts Gouache Painting White Clematis Alfred Hoare Powell C.1950

English Arts & Crafts Gouache Painting White Clematis, Alfred Hoare Powell C.1950

A densely observed study of white clematis (Clematis montana or similar), rendered with the patient naturalism characteristic of the British Arts and Crafts tradition. The composition fills the picture plane entirely, an immersive tangle of open flowers, swelling buds tipped in dusky mauve, sinuous stems and grey-green foliage.
