Pair of Congolese Carved Malachite Dishes, C.1970
A characterful pair of decorative dishes carved from solid Congolese malachite, each hollowed from a single piece of natural stone to form a shallow vide-poche. The two pieces differ pleasingly in outline: the larger is an organic asymmetric wing or leaf form with a pointed lateral extension, the smaller a compact polygonal shape with a more regular scalloped rim.
Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo (Katanga)
Medium: Solid carved and polished malachite
Dimensions:
Dish 1: W 10 cm, D 9 cm, H 2.5 cm
Dish 2: W 9 cm, D 9 cm, H 2 cm
Condition: Good. Natural matrix inclusions and minor surface variations inherent to the stone. No chips or cracks observed.
