Alfred Hoare Powell (1865–1960) 'Cottage Window with Climbing Clematis and Roses' 1953
Alfred Hoare Powell was an English Arts and Crafts architect, designer and painter, celebrated particularly for hand-painted Wedgwood ceramics and closely associated with the Ernest Gimson circle in the South Cotswolds.
A luminous and botanically attentive garden study, signed in full lower right and dated 1953, depicting a leaded cottage casement window all but consumed by vigorous climbing growth.
The handling throughout is assured and personal. Loose, semi-translucent washes in the foliage contrasting with opaque chalky whites. The work of a painter for whom decorative vitality and botanical accuracy are held in productive tension, the visual language of the Arts and Crafts tradition in which Powell was formed.
Housed in its original Oxford frame, with a Ryman & Co., Ltd. trade label to the verso (Fine Art Dealers, 23 High Street, Oxford, est. 1819, "By Appointment").
