Alix Jennings (British, 1884–1980) Still Life of Michaelmas Daisies and Asters in a White Pedestal Vase, Oil on Board
A generous and accomplished flower piece by the British painter Alix Jennings, depicting an exuberant bouquet of Michaelmas daisies and asters, white, pink, crimson, purple, and pale blue in a white pedestal vase on a warm terracotta-toned surface, against a softly graded grey and gold ground.
The painting demonstrates the attentive naturalism that made her one of the most admired British flower painters of the mid-twentieth century. A few stems have fallen to the ledge below, a classical vanitas touch that gives the arrangement spontaneity and life.
Signed lower left Alix Jennings in white paint. The verso bears the inscription Raeburn Studio, Farnborough, Hants, Jennings's own studio address, confirming direct studio provenance.
Presented in a period linen-mounted frame with a cream painted slip.
Alix Jennings was active throughout the 1920s - 50s, she exhibited at the Royal Academy, and is today particularly associated with flower paintings. Her works are held in the collections of the Museum of the Order of St John, Windsor & Royal Borough Museum, and Jesus College, Oxford.
