A refined and well-preserved example of Anglo-Indian decorative craft, this small rectangular wall mirror is set within a richly carved ebonised wood frame of the type produced for the British colonial market during the late Victorian period.
The frame is constructed in multiple stepped mouldings, each carrying distinct carved ornament: the principal band features a continuous sinuous vine of five-petalled flowers and curling foliage set against a finely worked crosshatch ground, a motif drawn from the Mughal decorative vocabulary and characteristic of Indian craftsmen working to satisfy British taste. The outer edge is finished with a turned bobbin-and-bead border, adding further textural interest.
In good condition commensurate with age.
